Sony and Panasonic have enough prior experience in collaboration during the development of Blu-Ray optical format by excellence today. This time they teamed up again to bring the optical storage to another level.
Sony and Panasonic Announce “Archival Disc”, the successor to Blu-Ray
There is a need for reliable long-term storage only optical disks can provide. That is why we will develop a new format for the next generation of optical discs that will focus on the pros. The two companies have promised to have ready a version of 300GB in two years or less.
Under the name of “Archival Disc”, the successor to the Blu-Ray will have natural properties that protect the data of the problems caused by dust and water as well as being resistant to changes in temperature and humidity.
This new format is intended primarily for industries cloud storage, and digital cinema as the main consumer. Seems destined to 4K movie and video file storage, but it is possible that in the future the next consoles make use of this format. However, the advance of technologies like streaming video games in the cloud, do not have to resort to this type of storage.
Nothing has been said about the price that will go on sale early Archival Disc players. Soon we will bring you more information.
