In 2012 we had RE Revelations, Operation Raccoon City and Resident Evil 6 all we hoped would be the best game of the year but ended up disappointing many by having too much action. As a result the best RE that came out last year was Revelations, but it was only available for Nintendo 3DS, and not everyone has a 3DS. Fortunately the wait was over, and this week the game was released for PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and WiiU.
The story takes place between Resident Evil 4 and 5. Chris Redfield has been kidnapped by a terrorist organization so Jill Valentine and her new partner Parker will have to go rescue him. This leads eventually to a ghost ship as expected is filled with mutant creatures infected by the T-virus and things get ugly.
Also the experiences of several other characters whose plots intersect finally counted. They are not very deep but stories are what enough entertaining to hang out. The episodic manner in which the game is presented keeps digestible things and feel like you’re progressing.
There are always incentives to move forward in this game.
The best thing about this release is that the series finally returns to his roots , to what Resident Evil does best, creating tense situations, wrap in claustrophobic places, give ammunition and let go a few monsters that want to eat your head.
The advantages of being on a boat is that there are many passages and indoors. This combined the strange noises create the perfect environment to give us some scares. What makes me happy is that pretty transition from the small screen of the Nintendo 3DS TVs and monitors has been almost perfect. And admittedly not need super graphics to scare you.
After finishing it sure will want to write to Capcom saying: Please Resident Evil 7 is based on this game and not in RE6.
The same graphics engine that Resident Evil 5 was set so that the game looks good, the only thing not expect to see the latest generation of detail was used. Some textures if they are compressed. Interestingly, move to HD has made the game unless scare 3DS version.
But what make it stand out to Resident Evil Revelations are the sounds and the soundtrack is possibly one of the best of the franchise. In moments of suspense is hard not have the creeps because of the sound environment.
Some enemies are made based on the DNA of piranhas and sharks. Pena who have not made platypus.
Another difference in this game is that the monsters are made from water, so enemies can appear anywhere. The bosses are also grotesquely great and a few others may give them nightmares.
It will take about 10-12 hours to finish the campaign but then can return to play in the infernal mode where enemies multiply and appear in unexpected places like hallucinations character. Also some multiplayer modes that include the will entertained for weeks.
Pros:
- Back to the origins of the franchise.
- Little ammunition to make you appreciate every shot.
- It combines survival horror action with correct doses.
- The weapons and enemies.
- The boat is the perfect location for this type of game.
- The episodic story structure with various characters.
- Music that puts you the creeps.
- The Infernal mode.
Cons:
- Sometimes you have to do too much backtracking.
- Some graphics are compressed textures.
- The story sometimes becomes a bit ridiculous.
- Resident Evil Revelations graphics
Verdict:
Revelations proves that Capcom can still make good games with this franchise. The atmosphere is heavy, the action scenes are balanced with suspense and progression of the game is very well defined. It has some flaws but that does not mean that the final experience is a very good survival horror. Rejoice that the best RE game of 2012 is finally available for the wider public can enjoy it.
Resident Evil: Revelations has scenes that combine the best elements of the past and future of the franchise.
Revelations is now available for PC, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo 3DS.
